Chinnaswamy Stadium Stampede: The frenzied celebration in Bengaluru over RCB winning the IPL after 18 long years took a tragic turn when a stampede broke out near the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Karnataka's capital.
Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said that the crowd was uncontrollable. "I think this is not a controllable crowd. I apologise to all the people of Bengaluru and Karnataka, we wanted to take a procession, but the crowd is uncontrollable," DK Shivakumar told news agency PTI. On being asked about the stampede-like situation, Shivakumar said, "Can't confirm anything. We had arranged more than 5,000 personnel. This is a young vibrant crowd, we can't use lathi."
Some cricket enthusiasts were reportedly injured and a few of them fell unconscious outside the Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday. While a lot of fans gathered for the felicitation held by the Karnataka State Cricket Association, visuals showed police shifting the injured persons and those who fell unconscious to nearby hospital.
The celebration turned chaotic, with horrifying visuals showing people gasping for air, some collapsing, as police struggled to control the surging crowd outside Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, there was no immediate official confirmation.
Among the distressing visuals, a child is seen fainting in the crowd, prompting an immediate response from police officers who rushed to carry the injured to safety.
RCB defeated Punjab Kings by six runs in the IPL final at Ahmedabad on Tuesday to clinch their maiden title in 18 years. It was another major achievement for the side's talisman Virat Kohli, who has only played for this franchise since the league's inception.
