A major mishap occurred at a private amusement park on East Coast Road in Chennai on Tuesday, when a joyride malfunction left 36 people stranded more than 50 feet in the air. Among those stuck were women and children. Fire and rescue services were alerted immediately, and a rescue operation is currently underway.
After hours of rescue operation, all the people have been evacuated from the joyride safely.
Meanwhile, the authorities have indicated that a giant crane will be used to safely bring down the stranded riders, one at a time. The incident left others at the amusement park shocked. Officials are taking all the measures to rescue those stranded at the ride. More details are awaited in the matter.
According to TOI, the incident happened at around 6pm when the “Topgun” roller coaster suddenly stopped about 50 feet above the ground after a loud noise. This ride usually goes straight up and then drops down quickly, but it stopped halfway, leaving the riders stuck in the air.
Amusement park staff tried to rescue the people using a crane, but it couldn’t reach high enough. So, they called the fire department. A rescue team from Guindy came with a special vehicle that could go up to 150 feet.
The rescue began at about 8.30pm and took around an hour. Firefighters gave water and biscuits to the people stuck on the ride and then brought them down safely one by one. Medical staff were ready at the scene to give first aid, but thankfully, no one was seriously hurt.
The rescue operation was led by Adyar’s deputy police commissioner, Pon Karthik Kumar. The local Neelankarai police filed a case and started looking into the safety measures followed by the amusement park.
According to an officer involved in the investigation, early signs suggest the ride had not been properly maintained and had some mechanical problems that were ignored by the operators.
