The Indian Railways has officially launched the much-awaited Vande Bharat Express between Katra and Srinagar, marking a significant step in boosting rail connectivity to the Kashmir Valley. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the service, which is set to commence operations from June 7.
This newly introduced train is specially engineered to withstand harsh weather, including sub-zero temperatures reaching -15°C. The journey becomes even more remarkable as the train crosses the iconic Chenab Bridge—the world’s highest railway bridge—offering passengers stunning views along the way.
Reportedly, two Vande Bharat Express trains will operate daily on the Katra–Srinagar route.

Travelling from Delhi to Srinagar by Train: What You Need to Know

Although Srinagar doesn't yet have a direct railway line from Delhi, you can still plan a smooth train journey. The nearest major station to Srinagar is Jammu Tawi, located about 270 km away. From Jammu or Katra, travellers can reach Srinagar either by bus or private taxi.
Several trains from Delhi connect to Katra, allowing passengers to transfer easily to the Vande Bharat Express for their onward journey to Srinagar.
