Chhattisgarh: More than 15 Maoists have been killed in an encounter with security forces in the dense forests of Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district near the Telangana border, a senior police official confirmed on Wednesday. The firing started early in the morning in the Karregutta hills, where a massive anti-Naxal operation has been ongoing for over two weeks.
The operation, named Operation Sankalp, is being described as one of the biggest counter-insurgency offensives ever undertaken in the Bastar region. It was launched on 21 April, acting on intelligence about the presence of top Maoist leaders, including members of battalion no. 1, the most formidable military unit of the Maoists, and the Telangana state committee of the outlawed group.
“So far, more than 15 Naxalites have been killed and the operation continues,” a senior police officer said, while declining to give an exact number until recovery and identification of bodies is complete.
The coordinated assault involves a staggering deployment of around 24,000 personnel drawn from various security agencies. These include the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Bastar Fighters, Special Task Force (STF), all units of the Chhattisgarh Police, and central forces such as the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and its elite commando unit CoBRA.
Security personnel have been combing the rugged terrain of the Karregutta hills, a region known for its difficult access and dense forest cover, which has historically served as a stronghold for Maoist guerrillas operating in the inter-state border zone.
