Assam witnessed a marginal improvement in flood conditions on Saturday, June 7, as the number of affected people declined to 3.37 lakh across 12 districts, according to the latest bulletin by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). This marks a drop from Friday’s figure of 4.43 lakh. However, the death toll rose to 17, following the report of one more casualty in Kamrup (Metro).
While floodwaters have begun to recede in some regions, widespread damage continues, particularly in the districts of Sribhumi, Hailakandi, and Cachar.
Sribhumi remains the worst-hit, with 1,93,244 people still reeling under the flood’s impact. Hailakandi has 73,724 affected residents, while Cachar reports 56,398. Other impacted districts include Nagaon, Kamrup, Morigaon, Goalpara, Darrang, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Kamrup (Metro), and Golaghat. Several rivers continue to flow above the danger mark the Brahmaputra at Dhubri, Kopili at Dharamtul, Barak at B.P. Ghat, and Kushiyara at Sribhumi posing ongoing threats to low-lying areas.

Relief and Rehabilitation Measures

Authorities have ramped up relief efforts in the most severely impacted regions. Sribhumi has set up 53 relief camps, while Cachar is operating 115. Relief centres have also been established in Biswanath, Morigaon, Hailakandi, and Nagaon.
In Morigaon, the Public Health Engineering Department has installed five hand tube wells and is distributing chemical packets and awareness leaflets to ensure access to safe drinking water. Meanwhile, flood damage has taken a toll on power infrastructure in North Lakhimpur, where 16 electric poles, 3 transformers, and 11.5 km of power lines were reported damaged.
To aid the agricultural sector, the Veterinary Department in Sribhumi has distributed 300 quintals of rice bran to livestock owners in flood-affected areas such as Asimganj, Kanaibazar, Jurbari, Kabaribond, and Faridkuna.
Urban areas are also facing challenges, with flash floods reported in Kamrup and Darrang, impacting at least 657 residents. Several municipal wards in Kamrup remain submerged. Landslides in Dima Hasao and Kamrup (Metro) have forced evacuations, with 34 people currently taking shelter in a relief camp in Dispur. The number of deaths due to landslides has reached six.
Despite the reduced number of affected individuals, Assam continues to grapple with widespread devastation, especially in agriculture, infrastructure, and local livelihoods. With several rivers still flowing above danger levels, sustained relief, rescue, and rehabilitation measures remain vital to aid the recovery process.
