Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stoked controversy on Tuesday after he hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and suggested the involvement of US President Donald Trump in the ceasefire understanding between India and Pakistan.
Speaking at an event in Bhopal, Gandhi claimed, "A call came from (Donald) Trump and Narendraji immediately surrendered... history is witness to this. This is the character of the BJP and RSS (referring to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the ruling party's ideological mentor)."
"Narendraji followed Trump saying 'Narender, surrender' by saying 'yes, sir'," Gandhi jibed.
Drawing parallels with the 1971 India-Pakistan war, Gandhi said, "India broke Pakistan in 1971 despite threat of America. Lions and lionesses of Congress fight against superpowers and never bow down."
"I am well aware of the BJP and RSS people. Apply a little pressure... and they run away in fear," he added.

BJP claps back at Rahul Gandhi

His remark earned a sharp retort from BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari, who launched a fierce attack on the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, accusing him of making "indecent" remarks.
"Rahul Gandhi's words reflect his values. He makes such indecent remarks against the country's Prime Minister. But this is what can be expected from Rahul Gandhi, whose heart beats for Pakistan. Because when he offers floral tributes to the statue of his grandmother (Indira Gandhi), he does not even remove his shoes..." Bhandari told ANI.
"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has given a befitting reply to Pakistan's terror masters. Even Salman Khurshid to Shashi Tharoor, every Congress leader is talking about this, and Pakistan itself is giving evidence of this... The people of the country see this uncivilised Rahul Gandhi as an agent of Pakistan..." he added.
India has categorically maintained that the ceasefire understanding was arrived at after Pakistan reached out to India. The discussion was held bilaterally, with no involvement from a third country, after which the 90-hour military conflict came to a close. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed his administration played a key role.
