Cristiano Ronaldo’s son received his first Portugal call-up on Tuesday after the teenager was named in the squad to represent Portugal’s under-15s side at a tournament this month.
The 14-year-old, who is currently playing in Al-Nassr's academy, has represented the youth teams at Juventus and Manchester United. He will now don the red of Portugal while taking part in the Vlatko Markovic International Tournament in Croatia between May 13 and 18.
The development led to an emotional reaction from Ronaldo, who celebrated the moment with a four-word message on Instagram: "Proud of you, son!"
Last year, Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. proved his mettle by following in his father's footsteps and scoring a fantastic goal for the Al Nassr academy.
The goal's resemblance to Cristiano Ronaldo Sr.'s trademark aerial prowess was uncanny as Cristiano Jr. launched himself into the air and nailed a powerful header that sent the ball flying into the top corner of the net.
Earlier, Ronaldo had backed his son in his pursuit to follow football, but also pointed out that he was keen not to put any pressure on him.
“This generation, it is difficult to tell them something and let them do it,” he explained last year. “They will always see their daddy as an example, they see me every day in what I do, at home, in training, or in a game. They see me work a lot.
"Right at this moment, Cristiano wants to be a football player but I don't make big pressure, I make a little. He's 14 years old, he has pressure already to be the son of Cristiano [senior]. Let him do his own mistakes, but I hope that in the future he can be a professional player.
“If he doesn't become a player, maybe another job, but I will always support him. We cannot put pressure on our sons because we are famous.”
“It makes me happy to be here, not just because my son is here too. This age is very important because they in four or five years they will be professional.
“So my advice is to believe, listen to coaches, work hard, don’t sleep late. This is what I say to Cristiano. I really believe that in a few years one of them, a few of them, will be in the first team.”
