Carlos Alcaraz rallied from two sets down and saved three match points to beat top-ranked Jannik Sinner 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (10-2) for his fifth major title in as many finals.
It was Alcaraz’s second straight French Open title with a comeback, after trailing 2-1 in sets to Alexander Zverev in last year’s final, and a third major title from behind, following his five-set win against Novak Djokovic in the 2023 Wimbledon final.
In producing one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the clay-court tournament on Sunday, he emulated Djokovic’s feat from the 2021 final at Roland-Garros.
His incredible performance left the world in awe. Among those praising the 21-year-old was tennis legend Andre Agassi, who offered high praise for Alcaraz’s all-surface adaptability and unique skill set.
“Alcaraz’s best surface, shockingly, might be grass,” Agassi said. “Not because of his swings, but because of how the surface complements his physical traits. His speed, balance, and strength are extraordinary.”
“It has to do with the less diminishing speed that happens to him versus other players. And his strength of legs, his balance of getting under balls. You gotta remember, this guy has defence and speed like Novak, if not more.
“He has the feel like Federer, you could argue, at times, if not more.
“He has RPMs and pace like Rafa, you could argue, maybe even more.
“He has to string that stuff together,” explained Agassi.
“When he gets out there on the grass, and then you bring in that UFO movement stuff. His second step is ridiculous, and he believes in it so much,” he added.
