Coco Gauff won the French Open crown for the first time in her career after defeating Aryana Sabalenka in the final on Saturday (June 8) at the Court Philippe-Chartier at the Stade Roland de Garros in a three-set thriller by a 6-7, 6-2, and 6-4 scoreline.
Gauff has won a singles Grand Slam for the second time in her career, having previously won the US Open in 2023, where she also won the final against Sabalenka. However, the American star had won the women's doubles event at the French Open last year alongside Czech Republic's Kateřina Siniaková.
Coco Gauff's Come-From-Behind Win
Gauff made a forgettable start to the match as she found herself 4-1 down in the set. However, she managed to level the scores. She was broken twice in the set again, but Sabalenka failed to make the most of two chances while she was serving to take a 1-0 lead. However, ultimately, Gauff lost the set as the Polish star won the tie-breaker 7-5.
However, the 21-year-old came back stronger in the second half and was at her best in the second set and managed to level the scores with a 6-2 scoreline and took the game to the third set.
The third set started with both players breaking each other once and being level at 3-3. However, Gauff broke Sabalenka once again and managed to hold onto her serve to seal the crown.
History Created In Paris
Gauff has become the youngest woman since Serena Williams in 2002 to win both the French Open and US Open. She is also the youngest female player to win a Grand Slam on multiple surfaces since Maria Sharapova won the Wimbledon (2004) and US Open (2006).
Sabalenka was playing the French Open final for the first time in her career and will have to wait longer to hold the trophy. She has previously won two Australian Opens (2023, 2024) and the US Open (2024).
