An Indian Butler At A Premium International Resort Shares Quirky Behaviours Of Guests (Including Indians!)
Recently, during an international trip, we got friendly with an Indian butler who serves at a premium resort. His stories gave us a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse into some of the quirkiest behaviours of visitors from around the world.
He shared that Chinese guests are the easiest to handle and quite beneficial for business too. "The staff are happy serving them because their expectations are simple. They don't drink much. They just want to be well-fed, arrive early at the breakfast buffet, enjoy their food and then retire to their rooms by 7 pm. They hardly bother the staff after that, making the whole process smooth and pleasant."
Talking about the most gentle clients, he pointed out that Japanese guests are the sweetest to serve. "They are always saying “thank you” for every little thing, always smiling, and acknowledging good service with genuine warmth. It’s a pleasure to serve them."

On the other hand, he mentioned that the one of the toughest customers to serve are generally vegetarians. "They tend to have a lot of customisations and demands, often making the staff run from one restaurant to another to get their perfect meal. In contrast, those who eat non-vegetarian dishes are more willing to experiment and go with the flow. But we serve both with the same smile as our motto is to offer an unforgettable experience." He cheekily added that being an Indian vegetarian abroad, especially if you are very particular, can be quite challenging. He further added Indian men get quite easy to manage after downing a few drinks but women keep getting their drinks and food customised.

Another server shared that the customers who leave the smallest margins for all-inclusive premium packages are the Russians and Europeans. “They finish multiple bottles of champagne and wine, constantly guzzling down alcohol,” he said with a grin. “They love having fun, and they do it regardless of the time. They will be drinking till late, keeping the staff on their toes. But the best part is, keep giving them alcohol and they are happy.”
Having worked across countries in multiple premium resorts, he feels that the hospitality scene abroad is very different from India. “Once you have worked in Indian hospitality, you will find peace of mind everywhere else,” he adds cheekily.
