Southwest Colombia was reportedly rocked by a string of explosions that left at least one person dead, police said Tuesday, in what appeared to be a coordinated attack.
Four car bombs and three other explosive devices detonated in Cali and in villages across the southwest of the country, including Corinto, where an AFP journalist said a municipal building was gutted and scorched.
The attack comes days after Right-wing Colombian leader and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay was shot in Bogotá on Saturday in a chilling reminder of Colombia's violent past. The attack took place in a park in the Fontibon neighbourhood when armed assailants shot him from behind, said the right-wing Democratic Centre, which was the party of former President Alvaro Uribe.
A medical report from the Santa Fe Foundation hospital said the senator was admitted in critical condition and is undergoing a "neurosurgical and peripheral vascular procedure." He is reported to be fighting for his life.
