Over 124,000 people across middle and northern Georgia suffered a power outage on Saturday due to downed power lines and uprooted trees amid severe weather across the state. The National Weather Service had announced multiple thunderstorm warnings for many regions in Georgia, with the capital city of Atlanta facing a storm in the afternoon.
The Severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for all of north Georgia, metro Atlanta, until 9 PM.
According to Georgia Power, more than 124,000 people remain without power from over 1,200 active outages as of 7:14 PM on Saturday. The hardest-hit area was Cobb County, near Atlanta, where the highest number of outages (26,481) was reported. Crews are working to restore service as conditions allow. Fulton and Dekalb counties were close behind with over 16,000 outage reports.
"Severe weather, including heavy rain and lightning, are passing through our state downing trees and power lines. We remind customers to stay safe as we work to restore power safely and as quickly as possible," the message of Georgia Power's message read.
This severe weather system has also impacted parts of central and eastern Alabama as well as parts of Tennessee.
