A wildfire erupted Wednesday near the Rowena Crest viewpoint in the Columbia River Gorge, triggering a Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation for nearby residents. The blaze, reported around 1:30 PM by the Wasco County Sheriff's Office, is burning close to the Tom McCall Preserve and Mayer State Park.
As a result, Interstate 84 between Mosier and The Dalles has been shut down in both directions near milepost 78.
An emergency evacuation map shows a limited area under the Level 3 alert, located just east of Mayer State Park, along Highway 30 and Rowena Ferry Road. Authorities are urging people in the affected zone to evacuate immediately for their safety.
The Storm Prediction Center has issued an elevated fire risk for central Oregon and Washington, including areas of the Columbia Gorge, due to strong winds and low humidity levels.
