The US Department of State's 2022 report is the closest thing to a true description of Bashar al-Assad's riches. In addition to his sister Bushra Assad, brother Maher Assad, cousins, and uncles, the research evaluated the wealth of Bashar Assad and his wife Asma Akhras Assad. The study starts off by admitting that the estimates were mostly based on publicly available data and that they were unaware of Bashar's three children's financial situation: Hafez, Zayn, and Karim, who were all adults in 2024.
According to various media reports, the Assad family's net worth is between $1 and $2 billion, a figure that the US Department of State was unable to "independently corroborate." Nearly every significant economic activity in the nation is either directly or indirectly controlled by the Assads. Since their assets are hidden in many accounts, real estate portfolios, corporations, and offshore tax havens, it is nearly impossible for an outsider to calculate their exact net worth. In addition to operating shell corporations, they use dummies and phony names to evade identification and sanctions.
