In today’s hyper-connected world, the fear of missing out (FOMO) has become a universal issue. Social media bombards us every day with pictures of people having fancy vacations, going to interesting events, or reaching milestones that make us feel like we are lagging behind. This constant comparison can create anxiety, dissatisfaction, and even depression. But there are means to cope with FOMO and redirect your attention towards a more satisfying and contented life.
Social media is an edited reality. Individuals only tend to share the best parts of their lives and omit the rest. Recognising that these highlight reels are only a part of reality can also alleviate pressure from living up. Stepping away from social media or reducing the amount of time spent on a screen can help as well.
Practice Gratitude
Being grateful for what you have instead of what you don't have is an effective antidote to FOMO. Maintaining a gratitude journal, in which you record things you are grateful for in your life, serves to alter your perspective towards being content. When you recognise the worth in your experiences, the desire to compare reduces.
Prioritise Meaningful Connections
Instead of being jealous of what others have experienced, invest time in making your actual relationships stronger. Take quality time with your loved ones, pursue activities that make you happy, and build relationships that offer you real fulfillment instead of virtual approval.
Live in the Present
FOMO tends to come from the worry that we are not taking full advantage of the time we have. Yet, concern over what others are doing steals the enjoyment from your own current moments. Mindfulness practice—through meditating, deep breathing, or simply being fully present in your activities—can enable you to find happiness in your journey without distraction.
FOMO tends to be the result of outside pressures and social expectations. Make time to consider what you really care about instead of what is desirable at the moment. Creating personal goals and striving for them creates a sense of direction, which means you are less prone to being led by what other people are doing.
