The Indian Army may soon get a new indigenous surface-to-air missile system. The Defence Ministry is likely to take up the proposal for buying three regiments of the indigenous Quick Reaction Surface-To-Air Missile System (QRSAM), reported news agency ANI.
The QRSAM would cost around Rs 30,000 crore. The report said that QRSAM may be deployed along both the western and northern borders.
The meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) is planned to be held around the fourth week of June, the report said.
This comes at a time when Indian air defence systems have proved their supremacy by successfully thwarting Pakistani aircraft, missiles and drones during Operation Sindoor. According to a report by the news agency, Pakistan has lost several aircraft, UAVs and missiles during the three-day hostilities last month.
Pakistan lost six Pakistani Air Force (PAF) fighter jets, two high-value aircraft, more than 10 Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs), one C-130 transport aircraft, and multiple cruise missiles, ANI reported citing sources.

Key Features Of QRSAM

QRSAM is developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The missile system is highly mobile and is capable of searching and tracking targets on the move and firing at short halts, reported ANI, citing defence officials.
It is a canister-based system, which means that it is stored and operated from specially designed compartments.
The weapon system consists of a fully automated command and control system. It consists of two radars - Active Array Battery Surveillance Radar and Active Array Battery Multifunction Radar - with one launcher.
The QRSAM will aid existing forces like MRSAM and Akash. It has a range of about 30 kms.
