Who could’ve thought dishes like halwa and aam ras could be enjoyed in space? Well, to prove the stereotypes wrong, Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla is all set to head for an exciting 14-day journey to the International Space Station (ISS) on June 10th. During his 14-day stay in space, he will not only conduct experiments but also savour some of the delightful Indian treats.
This journey is nothing less than a historic moment for Shukla as he becomes the first Indian astronaut to visit the ISS, and for the same, the menu is prepared by ISRO. To ensure that Shubhanshu Shukla remains well-nourished during this Historic mission, ISRO has teamed up with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to curate a selection of traditional Indian meals. Among the dishes prepared by ISRO.

Some of the comforting dishes include moong dal halwa, gajar halwa and aam ras, along with rice. These meals, initially intended for the Gaganyaan mission, will now be enjoyed by Shukla during his stay at ISS with NASA’s endorsement.
Making a way to the mission alongside the seasoned astronaut Peggy Whitson, who serves as the mission commander, Shukla will join the International crew that includes Polish astronaut Sawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski and Hungarian astronaut Tibor Kapu. The crew will spend 14 days in the ISS, conducting crucial experiments for both ISRO and NASA.

Moreover, Shukla has also expressed his intention of sharing traditional Indian cuisine with his fellow astronauts. The journey to the ISS is no small feat, and Shukla has also considered and acknowledged the unique challenges of astronaut training. In a conversation about the differences between military and space training, he highlighted how space missions involve international partners and how astronauts receive special training across multiple facilities.
Shubhanshu Shukla will explore how sprouted salad seeds grow in microgravity as part of the "Sprouting Salad Seeds in Space" experiment—a collaborative project between ISRO, NASA, and BioServe.
As Shubhanshu Shukla prepares to leave for space tomorrow, the entire nation watches eagerly. From prayers to good wishes and success, this mission truly added a star to the Indian space exploration and promotion of India’s cultural heritage on a global stage.
