Mumbai Train Accident: On Monday morning, June 9, a tragic accident took place on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, leaving five people dead. The incident occurred during rush hour, when thousands of office-goers travel into the city, especially towards South Mumbai where most offices are located.
The accident happened between Diva and Kopar stations, as two local trains—both extremely crowded—were passing each other. Many passengers were hanging from the doors and standing near the footboards, as is common during peak hours. A report by PTI quoted railway officials, saying it is believed that backpacks or bodies brushed against each other when the two trains crossed, causing some people to lose their balance and fall onto the tracks.
An eyewitness, who boarded the Kasara-CSMT train at Kalyan, described the chaos. He said the incident happened near Mumbra station, where someone in the coach ahead either hit a wall or something hit their compartment. Soon after, several people from both coaches fell. He estimated that around seven to eight passengers lost their footing. One of his friends, Rehan Shaikh, was among the injured.
"The incident happened when the train reached Mumbra station. Someone from the coach ahead of ours fell off after hitting a wall or something hit our coach. At that time, three-four people from our coach fell down and some from other coaches also fell. I think 7-8 persons lost balance and fell onto the tracks," he said.

He said his friend Rehan Shaikh (26), who was coming from Kalyan to Thane, was injured in the accident. In the morning, the passenger flow in Mumbai's suburban network is towards the south of the metropolis where a majority of the offices are located. The flow reverses in the evening as people start leaving for home towards Thane and beyond on the Central Railway network and Andheri and beyond on Western Railway. The morning and evening rush hours in the network are among the densest in the world.
