Ganga Dussehra 2025 Date: When is Ganga Dussehra? Know the Date and Auspicious Timings for Snan and Daan
Ganga Dussehra celebrates the descent of the sacred River Ganga from the heavens to Earth. Observed on the tenth day (Dashami) of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Jyeshtha, this day is considered highly auspicious for spiritual purification and liberation from sins. Devotees take a ritual bath (Snan) in the River Ganga or at other holy rivers, believing it cleanses them of ten types of sins. Daan (charity) is also an integral part of the day, symbolising compassion and spiritual merit.

This year, Ganga Dussehra will be observed on 5th June 2025. On this day, bathing (snan) in the River Ganga, and offering charity (daan), are considered highly auspicious. It is believed that such acts cleanse one's sins. According to tradition, it was on this day that river Ganga descended to Earth. The Ganga River holds a sacred place in Hinduism, revered as Maa Ganga, the giver of life and salvation. Daily aartis are performed in her honour in many major cities across the country. Bathing in the Ganga, giving in charity, and performing religious rites are believed to free one from sins, grant salvation, and please one’s ancestors. This occasion is especially significant and is marked by the worship of Maa Ganga.
Ganga Dussehra: When is it?
Ganga Dussehra will be celebrated on 5th June. Technically, the Dashami Tithi (tenth lunar day) begins at 11:54 PM on 4th June and ends at 2:15 AM on 6th June. According to the tradition of observing the festival on the day of the rising moon (Udaya Tithi), Ganga Dussehra will be celebrated on 5th June.
Auspicious Timings for Bathing and Charity on Ganga Dussehra
On Ganga Dussehra, Siddhi Yoga will last until 9:14 AM. Along with it, Ravi Yoga and Hasta Nakshatra will also be in effect. Following this, Taitila Karana will be in effect until 1:02 PM, after which Gara Karana Yoga will continue until 2:15 AM. According to the Hindu calendar (Panchang), bathing and giving in charity during these auspicious yogas are considered highly beneficial.
What to Do on Ganga Dussehra
- You may bathe in the River Ganga, which is believed to grant great spiritual merit.
- If visiting the river is not possible, you can mix Gangajal (holy Ganga water) in your bathing water at home to receive similar spiritual benefits.
- Light a lamp in your home temple and perform worship and aarti of Maa Ganga.
- Giving in charity on this day is considered extremely virtuous. After the aarti, distribute prasad (sacred food) among your family members.
