Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has won Canada’s federal election, despite the campaign unfolding amid tensions sparked by US President Donald Trump's tariff disputes and threats to the country’s sovereignty.. This marks the party’s fourth consecutive victory since 2015.
Following the results, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Carney, and expressed optimism about enhancing bilateral cooperation and expanding opportunities for citizens of both countries.
Relations between India and Canada had sharply deteriorated after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in September 2023, alleged a "potential" role of Indian agents in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil—claims that New Delhi vehemently rejected as “absurd.”
Tensions escalated later that year when Canada linked several Indian diplomats, including then High Commissioner Sanjay Verma, to Nijjar’s death. In response, India withdrew Verma and five other officials, while also expelling a matching number of Canadian diplomats.
Recently, officials from both countries have resumed dialogue, and there is growing interest in appointing new high commissioners. Trudeau’s departure has been widely viewed as a chance to reset ties between the two nations.

India had previously criticised Trudeau's administration for allowing pro-Khalistani factions to operate within Canada. Following the leadership change, New Delhi expressed hope for a renewed partnership grounded in “mutual trust and sensitivity.”
In March, external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “The downturn in India-Canada relations was caused by the licence that was given to the extremist and secessionist elements in that country.”
Commenting on the new political climate, Canadian journalist Daniel Bortman told Times Now, “Mark Carney is a man who will deal with what looks like all sides. This is how the Canadian Liberals work.”
