Aurora Alert Today: Displays of Northern Lights are possible overnight on Tuesday in some US states after a geomagnetic storm was forecasted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The agency's map shows that aurora is possible in several northern areas, including Washington, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota and Michigan. A smaller chance for northern Idaho, South Dakota, Wisconsin, northern Wyoming and northern Maine is also predicted.
Here’s the list of states where the aurora might be visible tonight:
Alaska - Strongest chance due to its northern latitude; nearly guaranteed visibility if skies are clear.
Washington - Northern parts, especially near the Canadian border, have a decent shot.
Idaho - Northern regions could see it low on the horizon.
Montana - High likelihood across the northern tier, especially in rural areas.
North Dakota - Good chance, particularly in the north, with minimal light pollution aiding views.
South Dakota - Northern edges might catch a glimpse if activity peaks at Kp 5.
Minnesota - Northern half favored, with Duluth and northward being prime spots.
Wisconsin - Northern areas, like near Lake Superior, could see it under optimal conditions.
Michigan - Upper Peninsula has the best odds; northern Lower Peninsula possible at higher Kp levels.
New York - Far northern regions (e.g., Adirondacks) might see it low on the horizon.
Vermont - Northern parts could get a faint view if the storm intensifies.
New Hampshire - Northern areas near Canada might catch it.
Maine - Strong potential, especially in rural northern zones away from city lights.
When Will Aurora Be Visible?
The best viewing window is between 10 PM and 2 AM local time, when darkness and auroral activity typically peak.
Conditions: NOAA’s OVATION model suggests a viewline dipping south to about 45°N latitude at a Kp of 5, covering these states’ northern edges. Posts on X and Forbes align with this, citing 9–10 states like Washington, Montana, and Maine for tonight.
