Maruti Suzuki India Limited dispatched a record 5.18 lakh vehicles through Indian Railways during the financial year 2024-25, accounting for nearly 25% of its total domestic shipments. The move marks a major push toward greener logistics in the Indian automotive sector.

By shifting a substantial portion of its vehicle transport from road to rail, the company claims to have reduced carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by over 1.8 lakh tonnes. Additionally, it has saved more than 630 lakh litres of fuel in the process, underlining the environmental and operational benefits of railway logistics.
Maruti Suzuki’s focus on sustainable transport isn’t new. It became the first Indian car manufacturer to receive an Automobile-Freight-Train-Operator (AFTO) licence back in 2013. Since then, it has transported nearly 24 lakh vehicles via the rail network, growing rail-based dispatches nearly eightfold since FY 2014-15.

Currently, the company operates more than 40 specialised flexi-deck rakes, each capable of carrying approximately 300 cars per trip, reaching over 600 cities across India. Looking ahead, Maruti Suzuki plans to increase the share of its vehicle dispatches via rail to 35% by FY 2030-31. The goal is in line with the company’s long-term sustainability roadmap.
“Reducing carbon emissions is a top priority for us,” said Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki. “Since acquiring the AFTO licence, we’ve made consistent progress in leveraging rail transport to support our logistics and environmental goals.”

This development positions Maruti Suzuki as a leader in sustainable logistics within the Indian auto industry, as the company continues to scale its eco-friendly initiatives in step with rising production volumes.
