MS Dhoni recently became the 11th Indian to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, and the only person from the country among the recent 7 inductees. Dhoni has had a legendary career for India, being one of the most successful captains in history, and also one of the greatest finishers in white-ball cricket. However, despite his accolades and his recent ICC Hall of Fame induction, the former Indian captain is still not eligible to become a permanent coach in the setup of the Indian team.

Why MS Dhoni Cannot Coach Team India

MS Dhoni retired from international cricket way back in 2020, with his last match for India being the ill-fated 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. However, the legend has still not called it quits on his cricketing career. Dhoni, at 43 years old, is still an active part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
As he is still an active cricketer, MS Dhoni is not eligible to join the Team India coaching team in any permanent capacity. However, he can still play a temporary role as a mentor, like he did for Team India in the T20 World Cup 2021.
MS Dhoni had a dismal run in the IPL 2025 for CSK. He scored just 196 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of just above 135. He also captained the side after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out due to an injury.

What MS Dhoni Said After ICC Hall Of Fame Induction

After being inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, MS Dhoni said that he was honoured to have his name among the great cricketers who are part of this elite club.
"It is an honour to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame, which recognises the contributions of cricketers across generations and from all over the world. To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling. It is something that I will cherish forever," Dhoni said as quoted by ICC.
