During protests in Los Angeles against the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, demonstrators vandalized multiple Waymo self-driving vehicles and set them ablaze. Videos widely circulated on social media show five Waymo cars damaged in the city’s downtown area, as tensions escalated over recent ICE raids and federal enforcement actions.
The Los Angeles Police Department estimates that at least 6,000 people were in the streets by 4 PM, with protestors clashing with law enforcement personnel in several locations. Demonstrators have blocked parts of the 101 Freeway, halting traffic between Alameda and the 110 Freeway interchange.
President Donald Trump deployed the California National Guard to Los Angeles amid escalating protests against recent ICE raids. Justifying the move, Trump claimed state leaders had “failed to do their jobs,” and warned the federal government would handle “RIOTS & LOOTERS the way it should be solved.”
The decision was quickly condemned by Democratic leaders. Former Vice President Kamala Harris called it a “dangerous escalation meant to provoke chaos,” and accused the administration of pushing a “cruel, calculated agenda to spread panic.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom demanded that Trump “rescind their unlawful deployment of troops” and return control to the state. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass echoed his concerns, stating, “This is about another agenda. It’s not about public safety.”
Newsom and Bass have urged protestors to remain peaceful and not cause any violence or destruction of property. "Los Angeles: Remain peaceful. Don’t fall into the trap that extremists are hoping for," Newsom said.
