Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his congratulations to Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney, confirming a diplomatic phone conversation between the two leaders ahead of the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta. In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi stated, “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month.”
The exchange marks a significant step toward resetting India-Canada ties, which have experienced turbulence in recent months. Modi emphasized the shared democratic values and deep-rooted people-to-people connections that underpin the bilateral relationship.
“As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit,” Modi added.
The G7 Summit, scheduled to be held later this month, will bring together leaders of the world’s most advanced economies to discuss pressing global issues. Kananaskis, Alberta, last hosted such a summit in 2002.
Mark Carney, a former Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, recently led his party to victory in Canada’s federal elections, marking a new chapter in Canadian politics.
This diplomatic outreach comes amid cautious optimism from both sides about repairing strained relations and exploring new avenues for cooperation in areas including trade, climate change, and technology.
