From Quiet Romance to Final Split: A Look At Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin's Relationship

8 years is a long time, isn't it? Actress Dakota Johnson and singer Chris Martin had been together, on and off though, for a period of 8 years before calling their relationship quits in June of 2025. Just recently, the duo had come to India for Coldplay's concert and they looked adorable together. From heading to mandirs to taking a holy dip in Kumbh Mela, it won't be false to say that people were in awe of the couple. Want to know how their love story started? Reportedly, the duo fell in love in the year 2017. No big announcements, no major public spottings. The two managed to keep their relationship lowkey and super private. However, their pictures from a Sushi date in Los Angeles did make some buzz. In the same year, Dakota also traveled to Argentina to be with Chris during one of his concerts. In 2018, when she was asked about her relationship with Chris, even though Dakota refused to comment on it, she did say, "I'm not going to talk about it, but I am very happy." The camaraderie and chemistry between the two has always been very much palpable. In fact, Chris's former wife Gwyneth Paltrow also had really amazing things to say about Dakota. "I love her. I can see how it would seem weird because it’s sort of unconventional. But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her. I always start to think of the ampersand sign—what else can you bring in, instead of being resistant to or being made insecure by? There’s so much juice in leaning into something like that," Paltrow had apparently said all this during an interview to Harper Bazaar. Interestingly, Dakota had also featured in Coldplay's "Cry Cry Cry" music video.

It was in the year December 2020 when Dakota was seen sporting a large emerald on her left ring finger back. Later, a source had told a publication that Chris and Dakota had gotten engaged but they are in no rush to get married. The following year, the two of them moved in the singer's mansion in Malibu. In one of her interviews to Elle, Johnson had given her fans an insight about her relationship. She had said, "We've been together for quite a while, and we go out sometimes, but we both work so much that it's nice to be at home and be cozy and private. Most of the partying takes place inside my house."

In 2023, when Dakota had received Hope Award for Depression Advocacy, she had spoken about how Chris helps her when things get tough. However, in August of 2024, some rumours started doing the rounds that Dakota and Martin had called it quits. Dakota's rep had soon shut down breakup rumours.
