- DC still have their playoff hopes in their own hands
With the 2025 IPL's restart looming, Delhi Capitals (DC) have announced that Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman has replaced Jake Fraser-McGurk in the squad. The Axar Patel-led side will be in action on Sunday (May 18) when they host Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
An official statement from the franchise revealed that McGurk has opted out due to personal reasons. While the availability of a number of Australian players is in doubt due to the World Test Championship (WTC) final, McGurk is not part of the Test squad.
The IPL revealed that DC had signed Mustafizur for a whopping amount of Rs. 6 crore. It remains to be seen if they are allowed to retain him next season, as the Capitals have signed ahead of their 12th game or he counts as a temporary replacement.
There are major doubts over Mitchell Starc's return, too, and DC's decision to sign a left-arm pacer indicated that the Australian pace-bowling legend is unlikely to make a comeback.
Talking about Mustafizur, this will mark a second stint for him at the Capitals, having played for them in 2022 and 2023. The Bangladesh star was part of the 2024 season of the IPL where he played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Overall, Mustafizur has played 57 IPL matches and taken 61 wickets, having also played for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Mumbai Indians (MI), and Rajasthan Royals (RR). He played a key part in helping SRH win the 2016 IPL title with a remarkable season in which he took 17 wickets in 16 matches at a stunning economy of 6.90.
As far as McGurk is concerned, he was re-signed by DC after using the Right to Match (RTM) card for a whopping Rs. 9 crore but has failed to replicate his heroics from last season. The 23-year-old managed to make just 55 runs in six games and was left out of the playing XI in each of their last six matches including the abandoned fixture between DC and PBKS.
Talking about the Capitals, they are currently in fifth place with 13 points and have three matches remaining. After the clash against GT in Delhi, they will travel to Mumbai to face the Mumbai Indians (MI) on May 21 before their final league stage game against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Jaipur.
