KanKhajura, which is based on an Israeli series, Magpie, premiered on SonyLIV on May 30. Directed by Chandan Arora, it stars Mohit Raina and Roshan Mathew as estranged brothers who reunite after 14 years apart. Mohit, who plays the older brother Max, talked about his role in the twisted family saga, filming in Goa, and if the show could return for another season.

Even though KanKhajura is an official adaptation, the actor stayed away from the original series. In an interview with Zoom, Mohit revealed he based his character Max Gaonkar on the director and writers' inputs. He shared, "I've been a fan of [director] Chandan Arora. I really loved Main, Meri Patni Aur Woh. It was one of my favorite movies back then. I sat with him because he was part of the writing game as well. I understood what he was thinking. I tried to see the layers that Max has. I had a certain boundary or certain characteristics of Max in my head before I went on shoot. But then, obviously, with the help of the director and the co-stars, a lot of things change."The actor went on to share that he wasn't sure if audiences would relate to Max, but people have liked seeing another side to him as an actor. In the series, Roshan Mathew plays his younger brother Ashu, who returns to society after a 14-year stint in prison. After his return, Max's life falls apart. Mohit said the two only met once before the shoot began.
He explained, "Roshan and me, we met for the first time in the JAR Pictures' office. And after that, we thought there was no need to meet. There were primarily two reasons. One, the main reason was because our characters meet after 15 years. So a lot has changed in 15 years. So I didn't know how he's going to play Ashu. And he also didn't want to know how I play Max. So the surprise element was very surprising for both of us."
Mohit continued, "We didn't do any readings. There was no prep. I didn't have a preconceived notion. Acha Roshan stammer karne wala hai. So everybody was caught off guard, so that was done deliberately. And I think that that works in their favour."
On KanKhajura Season 2
The Shiddat actor also shared that the story of KanKhajura kept surprising him, and he really enjoyed the making. He said, "It's a very twisted story, right? It's not every day a character like Ashu is written or a story like KanKhajura is written. So it was written beautifully, basically. So half the job was done when the writing was in place."
Magpie had two seasons, and the actor is open to coming back if the story is ready. Mohit stated, "Oh, I think if the writers have a great story and if the platform is more than happy, I don't think we will stop them from making multiple seasons for that. Why just one? The audience just wants the great story. Considering that this show has gotten this kind of acceptance in the peak of the IPL, where the final and semi-final were happening."
He added, "What Max does when he comes back or what he doesn't do, I have really no clue, but if they have a great story in place, it can become a revenge drama, or it can become from Max's perspective. I have no clue, but let's see; let's wait and watch."
All episodes of KanKhajura are now streaming. Sarah Jane Dias, Trinetra Haldar, Ninad Kamat, Mahesh Shetty, Heeba Shah, and Usha Nadkarni are also part of the cast.
